Jakar is the principal town of the Bumthang dzongkhag — sitting on the valley floor of the Choekhor (the principal Bumthang valley) at approximately 2,600 metres. The town is the natural base for visitors exploring the Bumthang religious circuit; the Jakar Dzong on the ridge above town is the dzongkhag's administrative and religious seat. Small in scale (population approximately 2,500) but rich in cultural and historical content.

The town sits on the valley floor with the principal religious sites (Kurjey Lhakhang, Jambay Lhakhang, Tamshing Lhakhang) within a 10-30 minute drive. The premium lodges (Amankora Bumthang beside Wangduecholing Palace, Six Senses Bumthang near Jakar) are within easy reach of the town. The town itself carries the everyday Bhutanese register — a single main road, the local market, the small restaurants, the gho-wearing pedestrians, the prayer wheels. Unchanged in atmospheric register from the late 20th century.
Jakar Dzong sits on the ridge above Jakar town — the administrative and religious seat of the Bumthang dzongkhag. Founded in 1549 by the great-grandfather of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal; rebuilt and extended at various points since. The dzong's distinctive feature is the long curtain wall enclosing the inner courtyards — substantially larger than most dzongs in the western circuit. The Bumthang Bhumthel choreographic performances are sometimes held in the dzong courtyards during festivals. The dzong is visitable during standard hours; the matched guide handles the visit register.
Within easy walk of Jakar town: the Bumthang Cheese Factory (the country's first, established 1968 as a Swiss-Bhutanese cooperation by Fritz Maurer); and the Bumthang Brewery (Swiss-style ales, produced locally). Both are visitable; both featured at premium lodge tasting registers. The Maurer family connection — Fritz Maurer remained in Bumthang and continues the dairy-development tradition — gives the operation a distinctive cultural register: Swiss agronomy in service of Bhutanese pastoral economy.
