A tshechu is not a parade. It is a three-day religious festival held on the tenth day of a lunar month, performed in honour of Guru Rinpoche, with cham masked dances that retell teachings the country has held for more than a millennium. The Thimphu Tshechu — typically the last week of September or the first of October — is the second-largest in the country and the most accessible from Bhutan.
We hold second-tier seating in the Tashichho Dzong courtyard — the row from which the cham dances are best read, neither so close that you're inside the dance nor so far that the masks lose their detail. Your guide names each figure as it appears, translates the song cycles between dances, and tells you when to look away (there is a tradition that the deity dances draw their power from being seen).
Two festival days, four ordinary days, one travel day. We use the non-festival days to balance: a quiet Paro afternoon, a Punakha overnight before the festival starts, a slow last day. The country fills for the tshechu; you want a week that doesn't feel like one too. We block lodges six months in advance for autumn tshechu travel — confirm 90+ days out.

Day 2
Drive into the capital; lodge afternoon; an early dinner before the tshechu begins tomorrow.
Day 3
Second-tier seating from 8:00; cham dances through the morning; lunch off-site; afternoon dances; evening at the lodge.
Day 4
Earlier start (the masked dances of the wrathful deities are morning); long lunch in a quieter quarter; afternoon dances or a rest at the lodge.
Day 5
Drive over the pass in clearer post-festival air; arrive Punakha by lunch; dzong at golden hour.
Day 6
Lobesa walk; the long suspension bridge; a long lodge dinner.
Day 7
Drive back; either Taktsang at pace or a quiet Paro last day; early flight.
