The trail begins at the BBS Tower car-park (the Bhutan Broadcasting Service television tower on the ridge above western Thimphu), 10 minutes by road from central Thimphu. The route climbs gently through temperate pine and rhododendron forest to the ridge that separates the principal Thimphu valley from the smaller Tashichho valley. After approximately 50 minutes of walking, the trail reaches Wangditse Lhakhang on the ridge top. The return descends via the same route — total approximately 2 hours of walking plus 20-30 minutes at the temple.

The lhakhang

Wangditse Lhakhang is an 18th-century temple of the Drukpa Kagyu lineage, the principal Bhutanese Buddhist school. The temple was substantially renovated in 2014 after damage from the 2009 earthquake; the present structure is faithful to the 18th-century original with reinforced foundations. The principal chapel houses an image of [[guru-rinpoche|Guru Rinpoche]]; the surrounding meadow is consistently strung with multi-coloured lung-ta (wind-horse) prayer flags.
