The first week of April lifts the temperature in Paro from the cold-blue clarity of March into something nearer warmth. By the second week the wild cherry is heavy along the Pa Chhu; by the third the rhododendron carpets Dochu La in a way that does not photograph well and does not need to. Jacaranda starts in Punakha in the third week and runs into May.
The Paro Tshechu is one of the country's three most significant festivals; it typically falls between the last week of March and the third of April. We will tell you in your proposal whether your travel dates fall within it and structure the days accordingly — second-tier seating from where the cham dances read best, with a guide who can name each masked figure.
Morning starts at 5:50 with mist on the river that lifts by seven. Late afternoon holds until almost six — a longer evening than autumn — and the warmth in the air means dinner on the terrace some nights. April is the photographer's other season; clearer than the monsoon, softer than the autumn, with more colour in the valleys than any other month.
