What a visitor encounters

• The opening chams

  Days 1 and 2 daytime — the cycle of chams that sit older than the western tshechus. The atmosphere is intimate, the audience predominantly Bhutanese.

• The mewang fire ritual

  Second evening, after dark. The grass arch, the lighting, the assembled community running beneath the flames. Photography is permitted; flash is discouraged.

• The bumthang setting

  Bumthang in late October to November sits in the deep autumn window — the buckwheat fields turning red, the pine forests dark, the Chumey valley golden. The 9-hour drive from Paro is broken with overnights in Punakha or Trongsa.

• Accommodation in bumthang

  Amankora Bumthang (in the Choekhor valley, walking distance to Jambay Lhakhang), Six Senses Bumthang, Wangdicholing Resort. Lodges are fewer than in Paro or Thimphu; book 6+ months in advance for the festival window.

What is the Mewang?

The Mewang is the fire-blessing ceremony held on the second evening of the festival. A high arch of dried grass is set alight; the assembled local community runs beneath it for blessing and cleansing. It is one of the few Bhutanese festival moments held at night, and the photographic tradition is exceptional.

Will I see the Tercham?

The Tercham is held in the small hours of one of the festival nights and is a sacred fertility cham; photography is restricted. Many international visitors choose to skip the small-hours session and attend only the daytime chams. Your guide will brief you on the schedule and the cultural context; the decision sits with you.

How do I get to Bumthang?

Approximately 9 hours by road from Paro via Thimphu, Punakha, and Trongsa — typically broken across two driving days with overnights in Punakha and Trongsa or Phobjikha. There is also a domestic Drukair flight from Paro to Bumthang's Bathpalathang airport (operating in clear-weather windows; not bookable as a single-day-arrival turnaround).

Is the festival crowded?

Less crowded than Paro or Thimphu — the international cohort that reaches Bumthang is smaller, and the festival's meadow setting feels more open. The Bhutanese attendance from the Bumthang and surrounding valleys is substantial, particularly for the Mewang.
