What a visitor encounters

  The principal mask dance cycle — the Pholay Molay, the Shawa Shachi, the Drametse Ngacham. In the goemba's small courtyard the dancers are close, the audience small, the experience intimate.

• The phobjikha valley

  Combine the Tshechu with two or three days of valley walking. The Gangtey Nature Trail runs the length of the valley floor (3-4 hours); the longer Shashila ridge walk gives the panorama from above.

• The autumn buckwheat

  Phobjikha's buckwheat fields turn pink to red in the late-September window; the festival timing catches the harvest.

• Accommodation in phobjikha

  Amankora Gangtey (in the valley with a 15-minute drive to the goemba), Six Senses Gangtey (in the surrounding hills), Gangtey Lodge, Dewachen Hotel. Lodges are fewer than in Paro or Thimphu; the festival window books 4–6 months in advance.

16–18 September 2026. The dates are calculated from the Bhutanese lunar calendar (5th–7th day of the 8th lunar month) and shift each year.

Is Gangtey Tshechu the same as the Crane Festival?

No — two different festivals at the same goemba. The Gangtey Tshechu (this page) is a three-day lunar tshechu in September or October. The Crane Festival is a one-day Gregorian-fixed event on 11 November, marking the cranes' return.

How crowded is the Gangtey Tshechu?

Substantially less crowded than the dzong tshechus. The international cohort is small, the Bhutanese attendance is local to the Phobjikha and Wangdue valleys, and the goemba courtyard is at a community scale. The atmosphere is intimate.

Will I see the cranes?

The Gangtey Tshechu window (late September / early October) is before the cranes' typical arrival (late October). The cranes overwinter in the valley from late October to mid-March. If both interest you, combine the Crane Festival (11 November) with two or three crane-viewing days instead, or extend a late-October Tshechu trip into November.

How do I get to Phobjikha?

Approximately 5 hours by road from Paro via Thimphu, Punakha, and the Pele La pass (3,420m). The drive is itself a notable journey — Dochu La, the rice terraces of Punakha, the cypress forests of Wangdue, the Lawala pass into the Phobjikha valley.
