Yathra
Yathra is the distinctive woven woollen cloth of the Bumthang region — thick, warm, and boldly patterned, made from the wool of sheep and yaks spun and dyed in the high valleys. Its designs are geometric and brightly coloured, traditional motifs built up stripe by stripe across the loom, and the finished cloth is made into the things a cold mountain region needs: blankets, jackets, the wrap-like charkep worn over the shoulders, table runners, and bags. Where the western valleys are known for the fine silk-and-cotton kira, Bumthang is the country of wool, and yathra is its signature — a craft born of the cold, the sheep, and the long winters of the high central valleys.
