LoadingA flagship Bhutanese premium operator
Six Senses Bhutan opened 2018-2019 as the newer five-lodge premium-accommodation circuit — covering the same five valleys as Amankora (Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey, Bumthang) with larger individual lodges (95 villas total vs. Amankora's 72) and the brand's distinctive wellness-and-sustainability positioning. The principal direct competitor to Amankora in the country's premium-accommodation market.
Six Senses · Five-lodge circuit across the principal valleys · Paro · Thimphu · Punakha · Wangdue Phodrang · Bumthang · 95 rooms
Six Senses Paro (18 villas/suites in a pine forest south of Paro town). Six Senses Thimphu (25 villas/suites on the ridge near the Buddha Dordenma). Six Senses Punakha (19 villas/suites on the valley floor near the rice paddies). Six Senses Gangtey (8 villas/suites with a valley overlook in Phobjikha). Six Senses Bumthang (25 villas/suites near Jakar). Approximately 95 villas total across the five — larger than Amankora's 72. Newer property age throughout (2018-2019) than Amankora (2004-2007); facilities are more current.
Six Senses follows the same valley-by-valley circuit logic as Amankora and was designed in response to Amankora's earlier circuit. The pitch differs in several specific ways: more villas per lodge (larger scale, less intimate atmosphere, more substantial facilities); wellness-anchored programming (every Six Senses lodge has a spa and wellness programme — the brand's global differentiator); sustainability-anchored (the global Six Senses Earth Lab programmes operate in Bhutan); a different architectural language across the lodges (not the Kerry Hill modernist-vernacular tradition that defines Amankora).
Each Six Senses lodge has a multi-modality spa. Treatments include the traditional Bhutanese hot-stone bath, Sowa Rigpa-tradition treatments, modern Western spa modalities, yoga, and meditation. The sustainability programmes are visible at each property — water purification, plastic-free programmes, organic garden produce, local-sourcing initiatives. Community engagement is part of the brand's global identity and is more visible than at some competing properties.
Amankora: established (since 2004), the original premium operator, smaller and more intimate, the principal loyalty among long-time premium-Bhutan visitors, the Kerry-Hill architectural reserve. Six Senses: newer (2018-2019), larger lodges, more wellness-anchored, more sustainability-anchored — appealing particularly to the wellness segment and to first-time premium Bhutan visitors. Both at comparable price band (USD 1,500-2,500+ per villa/suite). Different atmospheric registers; loyal customer bases on both sides.
