LoadingA premium Bhutanese hospitality brand
COMO Uma is the COMO Hotels and Resorts' Bhutan operation — two lodges (COMO Uma Paro, opened 2004 as the brand's first Asian property; and COMO Uma Punakha, opened 2012). Positioned in the premium-but-below-Amankora tier — substantial luxury with a contemporary-design atmospheric register rather than Aman-style reserve.
COMO · Paro (pine-forest ridge above town) · Punakha (Mo Chhu valley floor) · Paro · Punakha · 40 rooms
The brand's first Asian property, opened 2004. Twenty-nine rooms, suites, and freestanding villas in a pine-forest setting on the ridge above central Paro town — approximately fifteen minutes' drive from the airport. The principal Uma-Paro restaurant is Bukhari (named for the traditional Bhutanese wood-burning stove). The COMO Shambhala wellness programme operates here, with a substantial spa facility. The atmospheric tradition is contemporary-design with Bhutanese-vernacular references — warmer and more contemporary than the Aman properties. Best for first-time visitors to Bhutan, visitors preferring contemporary luxury over the Aman atmospheric, and visitors prioritising spa-and-wellness over deep cultural-immersion.
The smaller Punakha property, opened 2012. Eleven rooms and villas in a valley-floor setting near the Mo Chhu river, approximately ten kilometres from Punakha town. The river-and-paddy views and the rural tradition are the principal differentiators. More intimate than Uma Paro by design — better suited to honeymoon and romantic itineraries, and to visitors making the compact Paro-Punakha circuit without going further east.
COMO's global signature is the COMO Shambhala wellness programme — substantial spa and wellness facilities at every COMO property worldwide, with a particular brand identity around healthy-eating-and-movement. At Uma Paro the spa is full-scale (multiple treatment rooms, fitness facility, yoga pavilion). The COMO cuisine programme runs across both properties — distinctive Asian-fusion and healthy-cuisine, well-regarded internationally.
COMO Uma sits below Amankora and Six Senses in price and tier; substantially above the boutique-mid-tier (Dewachen, smaller hotels). Different atmospheric register from Aman — contemporary rather than reserve. The two-lodge structure covers Paro and Punakha but does not extend east to Gangtey or Bumthang; suitable for shorter premium itineraries (5-7 nights) but not for the full west-to-east arc.
