If it's your first journey to Bhutan
Most guests arrive with a feeling, not an itinerary — which is just as it should be. Here is the shape a first journey usually takes.
- How long
- Seven to nine nights is the usual first visit — unhurried, the western valleys without a forced march. Five is the shortest we'd suggest; ten and beyond reaches the central valleys.
- Where
- The classic arc runs Paro, Thimphu and Punakha — three western valleys of fortress-dzongs, easy markets and the first high passes. A week or more adds the glacial Gangtey valley; nine nights and beyond reaches Bumthang, the spiritual heartland.
- What you'll see
- Almost every guest makes the climb to Tiger's Nest, the monastery on the cliff above Paro. Around it: the great dzongs, the Dochula pass at 3,100 metres, and — in winter — the black-necked cranes of Phobjikha.
