Should we route through Bangkok, Singapore, or Delhi?

Bangkok and Singapore are the two principal recommendations for New York travellers — both have direct connections from JFK or EWR, both have premium hub hotels we know well, and both connect to Paro on Drukair the following morning. Delhi is shorter end-to-end but the hub experience is less suited to a celebratory overnight. We discuss specifics in the consultation; the right routing depends on your loyalty programme, your preferred carrier, and whether you want to fold a hub day into the trip.

When does the autumn window peak?

Mid-October through late November. Mid-October is post-monsoon clarity with the Bhutanese harvest in; the Thimphu Tshechu typically falls in late September / early October; the black-necked cranes start arriving at Phobjikha from late October. The Bumthang festival sequence (Jambay Lhakhang Drup, Prakar) runs October–November. We typically recommend the last fortnight of October or first fortnight of November for the most consistent weather + festival window.

What's included in the price band, and what isn't?

Included: all in-country logistics (Drukair internal flights if relevant, ground transport, lodges in our curated network, the matched guide for the duration, all in-country meals, visa, Sustainable Development Fee, Bhutanese departure taxes). Not included: the international long-haul (your booking, our advisory), the hub-stopover hotel (your booking, our advisory; commission-share arrangement with our preferred properties may apply), travel insurance, optional helicopter transfers, optional private experiences (a private dinner at a lodge, a private monastery tour with the resident lama, etc.) which we quote separately.

Can we extend with Bumthang or the east?

Yes — Bumthang adds three to five additional nights (the religious circuit of central Bhutan; the principal Pema Lingpa sites; the cheese factory; the autumn light in the broader valley). The full east-to-west traverse adds six to ten nights and is a substantial expedition. Both are signature-tier extensions; we discuss in the consultation if your dates allow.

Why nine nights, and why we recommend a hub stopover

New York to Paro is one of the longer trips your itinerary will ask of you — typically routed through Bangkok (eighteen hours plus the connecting flight to Paro), Singapore (similar), or Delhi (slightly shorter on the front leg, slightly longer on the back). We recommend a one-night hub stopover at one of a small set of premium properties we know well — the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, the Aman Nai Lert, the Capella or Raffles in Singapore. The hub-stopover hotel is your booking, on your own terms; we recommend, brief, and coordinate the timing so the Drukair morning to Paro is unrushed.

What the nine nights cover

Two in Paro to clear the long-haul fatigue and walk Rinpung Dzong, Kyichu Lhakhang, and the Pa Chhu paddies; two in Thimphu for the capital taken slowly and an evening at Tashichho Dzong; two over Dochu La in the warm Punakha valley with a long day at the dzong and Chimi Lhakhang; two over the Lawa La in Phobjikha for the black-necked cranes if the season is right (late October onwards) and the substantial quiet of the high glacial valley; one last night in Paro before Taktsang and the dawn flight back. The pace is deliberate — anniversaries reward presence over coverage.
